Worm , Caroline Mesquita, 2017

Gift of the artist Acknowledgements : Carlier | Gebauer, Berlin, Madrid
Caroline Mesquita is a sculptor and video artist working mainly in metal. Her sculptures are inspired by aeronautical, aerospace and automotive mechanical devices, combined with the power of radical imagination. The raw materials she uses provide the spark that drives her narrative engagement with notions drawn from science fiction and religion, and with concepts of embodiment, transformation, sensuality and sociability.
Caroline Mesquita's works are darkened, patinated and coarsely textured through a process of oxidation. With this technique, the artist handles metal as if it were paint. The sculpture Worm (metallic worm) was first shown in Lisbon (Kunsthalle Lissabon), where it appeared in the middle of a collapsed marble floor. The metal machine and its bones were then moved to Porto (Galeria municipal do Porta) for a second showing. It is now part of the Piacé le radieux art trail.
A film Astraya work of fiction in which sculpture plays the leading role, will be screened at the Kub d'Or and on view during the Quinzaine radieuse.
