Proposal for a new European flag, Christophe Terlinden, 2009

Flag. Alternating with other artists' flags on the mast near the Six Coques bubble.
"Christophe Terlinden revisits the European flag created by Austrian artist Arsène Heitz and adopted by the Council of Europe in 1955. Twelve stars representing the different nations (although the number of member states was already higher at the time) are arranged in a circle on a blue background. A. Heitz was inspired by the crown of 12 stars worn by the Virgin Mary in an image evoked in the Apocalypse of Saint John. He added a blue background, the traditional colour of the Madonna's cloak. While the number twelve is synonymous with perfection and refers to the number of apostles, Christophe Terlinden has replaced it with a continuous circle, symbolising union.
A political and poetic work, a reflection on Europe, its identity and its image, the European flag has been presented at various artistic events linked to Europe (Wiels, The Billboard Art Project - Vienna, Place Royale in Brussels) and is on permanent display at deSingel in Antwerp.
