Complex figures 1 & 2, Bevis Martin & Charlie Youle, 2018

The two pieces by Charlie Youle and Bevis Martin were created and presented in 2018 on the occasion of an art trail "Les Valleuses" held in Varengeville-sur-Mer. "Drawing on research into the symbols associated with the "theosophical society" - whose theories were developed at the Bois des Moutiers in Varengeville - the artists came up with a neuropsychological test whose form refers to the abstract currents of modern art.
The two sculptures, called 'Complex Figures', are based on the designs of the Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) by Rey (1941) and Taylor (1969). The aim of these tests is to measure episodic memory in a visual modality, as well as visuoconstructive skills.
