The Sentinel, Jef Geys, 2014

Production Piacé le Radieux Find out more

The Sentinel is a public sculpture created specifically for Piacé. It is a concrete column representing the full-length portrait of the artist, erected in the centre of the village. In this way, the artist observes us, keeps an eye out for us, and in a way becomes a new inhabitant of the village. This work is accompanied by a special edition of the newspaper Kempens Informatieblad which the artist usually publishes for each of his exhibitions. Rejecting the sacredness of works of art in exhibition catalogues, Jef Geys has been publishing this journal since 1971. The title "Kempens" comes from the translation of Campine, a region of Flanders where he lives. These diaries are veritable logbooks, interweaving without hierarchy the elements needed to understand his environment, his questions, his curiosities and his works. This special edition, entitled "Piacé le Bienheureux", in which Jef Geys invites himself as a resident of the village, was sent by post to all the inhabitants of Piacé.
